Yes…it’s mid January.
And if you’re like me, you might not have had the chance to look ahead to 2018. If so, now is the time!
It’s never too late to map out how to get the best from your year ahead. I really felt I’d squeezed everything I could out of last year. It wasn’t simply another year that passed by with little euphoria.
One or two hours spent now can set you up for a wonderful year ahead!
Here’s how I like to do shape my year and what works for me!
Organise Mini Breaks
We all feel happier after a little break away- even if it’s just two away somewhere close to home. Have a glance through the calendar for the year. Public holidays. Days off. Holidays away. Get in first and book some time off now before your colleagues think to do it for themselves. Give yourself something to save for and look forward to. Try to leave some room for spontaneity too!
We’re not counting our coins to get rich or to accumulate money for money’s sake. We’re doing this to create financial security for ourselves. What you measure grows and financial stress is one of the biggest modern day stressors we have. So it makes sense we keep an eye on what we’re worth to ensure it’s heading up rather than down.
Draw a line down the middle of a sheet of paper. On one side list everything that you own and it’s value. Cash, cars you own, how much your house is worth approximately, your superannuation. On the other side list everything that you owe. Credit cards, mortgages, car loans and any other debt you may have. The difference between the two is your net-worth.
As much as we may want to shy away from the money “stuff” at times the reality is that checking in at least once a year is important. What we’re aware of empowers us and allows us to make different choices if we need to.
And if you don’t like what you see on paper I hope my financial story here may help you to find a resource that supports you.
Set A Goal
Write down one goal for yourself and keep it in your diary. It can be something specific that’s important to you, a one word theme for the year inspired by Daniele la porte’s Desire Map book or it can be action/to do based such as run and train for a 10km fun run. Give yourself something fun, motivating and positive to work towards. I like to have a one word theme for the year and a couple of goals to inspire me.
This is all about creating space for the things we love to do as well as the things we don’t love to do. It’s all about making life simple and freeing up time for more downtime. Life and routines invariably change around our social life and work. This is especially true if you have children so please don’t feel any routine here has to remain fixed.
You can be as specific as you please. I know people who set aside the same evening every week to food shop, exercise the same nights every week, right down to households who eat chicken on Monday’s, Tuesday’s are vegetarian, Wednesday’s are for pasta, Friday’s are for takeaway or eating out so on.
Does my routine change? Of course. Often and all the time! But having a loose framework to work with allows me mental space to think of other more important things! And allows me more time for what I actually enjoy doing over things like food shopping.
What would you love to do in 2018? When can you set aside an hour of your time to plan out your year a little?
